Evaluation of anesthetic blocks during forelimb surgery for analgesia in dogs

Objective:

To compare three common brachial plexus block techniques used in dogs requiring forelimb surgeries, to assess the degree of analgesia and anesthesia achieved.

Background:

Administration of the brachial plexus block provides analgesia/anesthesia of the limb on which the surgery is to be performed, facilitates the delivery of general anesthesia by providing better pain control and allows for less use of inhalant (gas) anesthesia and systemic use of anesthetic drugs with analgesic properties. In addition, the analgesia can still be present in the post-operative period, which allows for comfort and return of normal behavior and function in dogs at a faster rate.

Incentives:

  • Cost of 30 mins of anesthesia
  • Extensive monitoring during anesthesia & surgery

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Undergoing forelimb surgery at OVC HSC
